Kids On Computers is going to Mexico in early December 2019 to install a new lab (Escuela Primaria Ricardo Flores Magon) and upgrade existing labs in Oaxaca, Mexico! We will be in Mexico from Dec 2-6th! Many of us are busily preparing for the trip, logistics, equipment procuring, software – client and server machines. Here’s a synopsis of how we’re doing on various aspects of trip planning and how you can help!
On Sept 29th, the KOC Board approved a new lab at Escuela Primaria Ricardo Flores Magón, an elementary school in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. Hermes Ojeda Ruiz, KOC Board member and volunteer, visited the school and met the local community. The school has approximately 485 students, with a maximum of 30 students per class. They have electricity, a lockable room for the lab along with tables and chairs.
The new lab will be a Raspberry Pi 4 lab! We are expecting to install 15 client machines, an Internet in a Box (IIAB) server, and a projector. Victor Timmons Chan, new KOC and IIAB volunteer, and Adam Holt, IIAB Community lead, are working on both the customized KoC distribution of Raspbian, containing some of favorite educational games such as TuxMath, and the IIAB 7.0+ server setup.
HOW TO help!
- Join us! You can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to join the trip!
- Software! Please reach out to us at email@example.com to help us prepare the software for the trip.
- Donate Equipment! We are running a fundraising drive for the RPi4 CanaKits. If you purchase from our Amazon Wishlist, and select Hermes’s address when checking out, the kit will ship directly to Oaxaca, Mexico! This saves us from having to carry equipment through customs and makes trip/equipment logistics significantly easier. Our goal is to have 30 kits donated!
